Post-Conference Tour of Hemingway Sites in Michigan's Upper Pensinusla

On Saturday, June 23, the Michigan Hemingway Society will offer an optional bus tour of Hemingway related sites in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This trip is open to conference attendees and anyone else who is interested. Trip details and application form are posted on the MHS web site

In connection with the Ernest Hemingway Society 2012 conference, the owner of Windemere, the summer boyhood home of Ernest Hemingway and a National Historic Landmark of the United States Department of the Interior, will open the property to registrants of the conference and to members of the Michigan Hemingway Society and the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park.


Pre-Conference Reception at historic Windemere on Walloon Lake

On Sunday, June 17, a pre-conference reception will be held at Windemere, the boyhood summer cottage of Ernest Hemingway. Windemere is a National Historic Landmark and is closed to the public. Attend a private reception and tour of the place that inspired many of the tales in Hemingway’s Nick Adams stories. Register for this private event by going to:

Consider bringing the entire family to the Northern Michigan vacationland during the conference. The Bay View Association is a family oriented community that offers fun and recreation for all ages. Historical Tour of the Bay View Community

Historians Mary Jane Doeer and John Higgins will be offering 60-75 minute walking tours of the Bay View community during the conference.

Mary Jane Doeer states that the places to be visited are:

  • the cottages and buildings Hemingway and his family frequented:
  • the location where Hemingway spent hours writing during his frequent visits,
  • the famous “party” cottage,
  • sites used in the German documentary about Hemingway starring Stacy Keach and Stuart Whitman,
  • the Connable family cottage,
  • the auditorium where Marcelline played viola in the Bay View Orchestra,
  • the building where Ernest’s aunt Grace Hemingway told children’s stories,
  • information on Bay View Assembly Director Trumbull White and the Pailthorp family,
  • and the building where Grace Hall Hemingway studied painting,
  • as well as other points of interest.
The cost of the tour will be $12.00. Sign-up for a tour during the conference registration on Sunday, June 17,2012 from 12:30-4:30pm.
